Add a comparison here, a poetic image there. But something always felt off. The metaphors sat on the surface of the story like stickers on glass. They didn't change anything. Split Narrative: How to Show Different Facets of Reality   One event. Three witnesses. Three completely different versions of what happened. And all of them are true.   The Problem I Couldn't Solve   For a long time, I wrote stories the way I'd been taught — one perspective, one timeline, one version of reality. But the more I wrote, the more I felt something was missing. Real life doesn't work that way. We experience the same moment differently. We remember the same conversation in completely opposite ways. So why should fiction be simpler than life?   The Moment It Clicked   I was working on «ORDYNSY: ACHERON'S MIRROR» («ОРДЫНЦЫ: ЗЕРКАЛО АХЕРОНА») and hit a wall. I needed to show a village that existed in different time layers simultaneously. My protagonist saw one thing. Another character saw something completely different. And a third — an observer — perceived it all as one continuous flow. Linear storytelling couldn't handle this. So I stopped forcing it. I let the narrative split.   How I Made It Work   I developed a system of anchors — repeating images, phrases, metaphors that exist in every perspective but manifest differently. In that same novel, the village was always there, but each character entered it through their own door. One saw ruins. Another saw a living settlement. The observer saw both at once. These anchors helped readers navigate between realities without getting lost.   The Reader's Role   What surprised me most was how readers responded. Some said they felt lost at first. But those who stayed discovered something unexpected — they became participants. They had to choose which version to believe, piece together their own understanding, fill in the gaps themselves. The story wasn't just told to them. It happened inside them.   What I Learned   The hardest part was letting go of control. I wanted to explain everything, make it clear, guide the reader. But clarity isn't the same as truth. Every time my characters tried to say something important, they turned into textbooks on legs — quoting philosophy, sounding profound, but completely dead. No life. No personality. I needed a conversation between mother and daughter about sacrifice — the kind you can't take back. But every version sounded like a lecture. So I threw it out and let them argue about a black flower in the garden. A stupid, petty fight. And that tiny argument said everything the grand speeches never could. That's when it clicked: I had been writing ideas, not people.   What I Started Doing   I began paying attention to real conversations. The way people interrupt each other. The way they say "never mind" when they desperately want you to keep asking. The way silence sometimes says more than words ever will. In that same novel, I started letting characters talk about ordinary things — flowers, mirrors, the weather. And the big questions crept in through the cracks. I didn't push. They just appeared. Like in real life.   The Hardest Lesson   Then came «SHADOW OF THE SLEEPER» («ТЕНЬ СПЯЩЕГО»). I wrote a massive dialogue — dense, meaningful, profound. Read it aloud and hated every word. Cut half. Hated it more. Recorded it on my phone, listened back, and finally heard what was wrong: my characters weren't talking with each other. They were talking at each other. I scrapped it, started over, let them misunderstand and interrupt and fall silent. That messy version — imperfect, unpolished — finally breathed.   What I Figured Out   You don't need a system. You need to listen. To real people. To your own characters. And sometimes you need to let them fail, interrupt each other, go quiet.
